Asia’s strongest storm of the year, Typhoon Yagi, reduced to a tropical depression on Sunday after causing extensive damage in northern Vietnam. According to a statement from the government, it has affected telecommunications and electricity supply in a number of regions, including Quang Ninh and Haiphong. Preliminary official estimates show the storm and the ensuing landslides and floods in Vietnam claimed 21 lives and wounded 229. Amid this catastrophe, a remarkable act of unity and humanity has gone viral on social media.
A video of a bike-borne individual struggling against strong winds and cars halting to protect the person has gone viral. Other vehicles also pull up to accompany the bike and protect it from the wind.
In another scene, several two-wheelers are seen guarded by cars moving slowly and at a constant speed to ensure their safety.
The caption accompanying the post read, “Typhoon Yagi has brought its challenges in Vietnam, but what stands out is the incredible unity and resilience of our people. No matter the struggle, we always decide to come together—lending a hand, sharing a moment. These acts of kindness show the true strength of our community.”
The video struck a chord with the viewers, who were deeply moved by the generous gesture.
A user commented, “This makes my cold heart warm. In the society where I live, selfishness rules the town. Bless those people.”
Another user said, “Why do I feel proud I’m not even from Vietnam.”
Yet another person claimed, “I was there. Today, all of Hanoi, every single person, is helping to clear trees and clear roads. I was amazed by the unity of the Vietnamese.”
“This gave me goosebumps. I’m living in Vietnam and I can say people do be kind,” read another comment.
An individual said, “Just another reason why Vietnam is my favourite place on Earth.”
