A 3-year-old girl named Layla Davis — who hails from Great Blakenham, England — has grabbed the headlines for a peculiar reason. Layla has dry and frizzy blond hair, and all attempts to comb them have failed. It is because she is suffering from uncombable hair syndrome. It is characterised by hair that is silvery, dry, frizzy, wiry, and impossible to comb. This hairstyle has previously earned Layla nicknames like Boris Johnson and Albert Einstein. As per a report published in The Sun, she is the only person in her family to suffer from this condition. UHS develops in childhood, predominantly between infancy and age three, but it can also appear as late as 12. Children who develop this condition tend to have light-coloured hair like Layla, and there are only around 100 cases of this problem globally. Another name for this hair condition is spun glass hair which usually improves over time – normally by adolescence. Layla lives with her mother Charlotte Davis (30), father Kevin Davis (37) and brother Freddie Davis (4) in Great Blakenham, Suffolk.
Charlotte interacted with The Sun regarding her daughter’s condition. Charlotte said that Layla’s hair had grown a little, but it hadn’t improved in the past year. It is a tough task for Charlotte to manage Layla’s hair and also she receives various reactions from people. She said: “Her preschool friends call her ‘Fluffy’ because of her hair. The other children are never negative about it and it means she is a very happy girl; she’s not shy and talks to everyone.”
Charlotte said that she doesn’t plait Layla’s hair as they are very delicate and can break off very easily. According to Charlotte, Layla has now started asking her questions about why she can’t get her hair plaited regularly. She tells Layla that her hair is a bit different and they need to take care of them. Another major challenge faced by Charlotte is teaching Layla about the topic of consent. It is because many adults touch Layla’s hair without even asking her.
Layla is a happy-go-lucky girl despite facing these problems and loves singing and ballet dancing.
