A retired IAS officer who began his career at TCS Mumbai in 1984, straight out of IIT BHU, has revealed the ‘princely salary’ he was offered at the time. Rohit Kumar Singh, a 1989 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre who was superannuated as Secretary to the Government of India, shared his offer letter from 40 years ago.

Now a member of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), Singh took to X (formerly Twitter) to reminisce: “A little more than 40 years ago, I got my first job at TCS Mumbai through campus recruitment at IIT BHU.”
He continued, “With a princely salary of 1,300 Rupees, the ocean view from the 11th Floor of the Air India Building at Nariman Point was regal indeed!”
The offer letter, dated June 20, 1984, confirmed his appointment as a trainee at TCS Mumbai, offering him a monthly stipend of Rs 1,300. It stated, “Further to our offer letter No. TCS/9065/BHUIT dated February 13, 1984, we are pleased to appoint you as a Trainee in our Division on a stipend of Rs 1,300 per month, all inclusive, with effect from June 4, 1984.”

The offer letter from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) also mentioned additional perks, including a House Rent Allowance (HRA). “In addition, you will be eligible for House Rent Subsidy as per the rules.”
The offer letter also instructed him to provide proof of his age.

The retired officer also revealed his first salary when he joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as a probationer in 1989. It was RS 2,200.
After graduating in Electrical Engineering from IIT BHU, he completed a Masters in Computer Engineering from Clarkson University, New York, USA, before becoming an IAS officer. Subsequently, he obtained a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University, USA.
