A triggering incident has angered the online users recently, involving a woman who was physically abused by her relative for demanding permission to visit her home. The incident happened to a Chinese woman who received a slap from her father-in-law after suggesting a visit to her parents during the Lunar New Year. It has stirred up widespread attention on mainland social media platforms. The woman, identified as Zhou, originally from Guizhou province in southwestern China, had reportedly married a man from Anhui province in the east. The unexpected and violent reaction from her father-in-law left Zhou in shock.
However, Zhou and her husband defied her father-in-law’s opposition by travelling for 1,600 kilometers to her parent’s residence. Subsequently, they made the decision to relocate there permanently, according to a report by South China Morning Post.
Lunar New Year, also referred to as Spring Festival, holds immense cultural significance in China, symbolising the onset of a new year on the traditional lunisolar calendar and announcing the arrival of spring.
Zhou, longing to reconnect with her own family after limited contact during her three years of marriage, found herself embroiled in a heated confrontation upon expressing her desire.
“I want to visit my family at Lunar New Year,” said Zhou. To which, her father-in-law replied saying, “A married daughter is like spilled water. Stop always thinking about visiting your family,” as per report.
Appalled by the behaviour of her father-in-law, the woman reportedly argued further and said, “Nobody can stop me from going back to them this year.”
Unfortunately, the situation escalated into physical violence, with Zhou receiving a slap on her face from her father-in-law. She reportedly said it was the first time in her life she had ever been hit and it made her head hurt.
Despite attempts by her husband to justify the altercation, Zhou, feeling undervalued within his family, opted to relocate to her hometown along with her husband, leading them to sell their apartment.
She told the news website that she was ultimately supported by her husband, who acknowledged her helping his family and they decided to visit her family on January 28.
This incident sparked widespread discourse on mainland social media platforms. Commentators, as per SCMP, expressed astonishment at the outdated mentality of the father-in-law, questioning his awareness of the current year. Others posed hypothetical scenarios, asking how he would feel if his own daughter refrained from visiting him in similar circumstances.
