In a bid to begin a career, an internship is a gateway to a corporate job for any individual. Most professions demand a highly skilled employee to carry out their task. Today, different sectors invite applications from young professionals for internships with lucrative offers. From paid to summer internships, students today have ample opportunities to kick-start their careers with big organisations. And a fresher often dreams of starting their journey with corporate giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and so on. Brook Gura (21) too had a golden chance to start her professional journey with a leading company – Tesla.
Bura spent three weeks interviewing with Tesla before bagging a summer internship offer from the company in February. The 12-week internship was scheduled to start on May 20. Gura, a University of Texas student, was looking forward to spending her summer as a recruiting intern in Tesla’s human resources department, the Business Insider reported. But, three weeks before her internship started, the automaker revoked her offer. And now, she is reworking on other plans.
“It was exciting. I was looking for a big corporate internship. And it was close by. I wouldn’t have had to relocate,” Gura said. She added that she had rejected other offers for an internship at Tesla because she was particularly stoked about the compensation — $26 (about Rs 2,100) an hour.
Gura told Business Insider that she wasn’t initially worried despite layoffs. “Interns are relatively cheap compared to full-time employees. I figured if they were trying to cut down, I might even be working more,” she added.
A few days later, Gura received an email from a Tesla recruiter requesting a call back. As she tried to get more clarity on the situation, Gura came across a LinkedIn post from another intern who had lost their offer. Over a short call, the Tesla recruiter told her that “The company was making cuts that were going to start impacting interns. That meant me… There wasn’t any room for negotiating,” disappointed Gura explained.
About Tesla layoffs:
Tesla announced layoffs in April impacting 10 percent of the company’s workforce. Employees at Tesla received emails over the weekend as part of broader layoffs, as per the Electrek report. The company disclosed in notices last month that it will lay off more than 6,700 employees across its locations in Texas, California, Nevada and New York.
