A video of an elephant battling for its life after being attacked by a crocodile has left viewers horrified. The moment was captured by a CCTV installed at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe. The near-fatal incident’s footage was uploaded to the YouTube channel Latest Sightings, which often features footage of African animals.
The elephant in the company of its herd, was ambushed by a crocodile while peacefully drinking from a waterhole in Zambezi National Park. The video shows the elephants being intimidated by the crocodile several times.
The reptile eventually succeeded as the herd returned to the waterhole one morning. Unaware of the crocodile’s presence, one of the elephants accidentally stepped too close, prompting the reptile to snap with all its might.
The crocodile seized the tip of the elephant’s trunk, causing it to scream in agony and quickly retreat. A fierce battle ensued as the elephant was compelled to drag the crocodile out of the waterhole, its trunk bearing the weight.
According to Latest Sightings, the rest of the herd scattered as the elephant, in a desperate move, vigorously shook its head, eventually forcing the crocodile to let go.
The video had over 6 lakh views at the time of reporting. According to Latest Sightings, even as babies, elephants tend to be larger than the typical prey of crocodiles.
The footage also shows the crocodile challenging some of the largest elephants in the herd, indicating that this was not about food, they added. Elephants can consume well over 200 litres of water a day and are constantly seeking out the cleanest water sources.
The channel further said that the waterhole in Zambezi National Park offers an ideal spot for them, which is likely why they continued to return despite several encounters with the crocodile, which seemed to have a particular aversion to elephants.
