Chocolate Day is believed to have originated as a Christian feast day dedicated to honouring Saint Valentine and others. The tradition of gifting chocolates to loved ones before Valentine’s Day gained prominence during the Victorian era and has become a normal practice in many countries. Richard Cadbury, a member of a British family known for manufacturing chocolate, played a pivotal role in popularising the idea.
Deciding how to use their pure cocoa butter extracted from his invented chocolate making process, Cadbury introduced eating chocolates packaged in beautifully designed boxes. He then started decorating heart shaped boxes with Cupids and rosebuds in 1861, making them not just containers for chocolates but also gifts for love letters and other mementos even after the chocolates were consumed.
Interestingly, chocolate has a rich history, which can be linked to the Mayan and Aztec upper class elites, who considered it a highly luxury product. They used a special drink made by combining roasted cacao beans with cornmeal, vanilla, honey and chilies. Cacao beans held a value compared to gold and were even used as a form of currency to pay taxes imposed by Aztec rulers. By the early 1600s, the love for chocolate went beyond Mesoamerica and across Europe. In London, chocolate houses emerged as popular social gathering spots, which became a huge competition for the coffee houses in the city.
