'I Empathise With Nick:' Novak Djokovic’s Message Following Wimbledon First Round Win
After his opening round win at the SW19, Djokovic spoke about his comeback from injury and had a message for Kyrgios, who failed to take part in any of the four majors last year due to wrist, knee and foot injuries.

Novak Djokovic kicked off his Wimbledon journey with a resounding 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva Tuesday. Djokovic had undergone knee surgery last month but the Serbian did not show any sort of discomfort during his first-round match which lasted for almost two hours. Djokovic had torn the medial meniscus in his right knee during the French Open. The seven-time Wimbledon champion was seen wearing a strapping on his knee during his win against Kopriva.

Following his qualification for the second round, Djokovic talked about his comeback from injury. He also had a message for Nick Kyrgios, who is currently recovering from an injury. Kyrgios is currently working for the BBC as an expert

“I’ve been fortunate comparing myself to other 37-year-olds. I had injuries like anybody else but they come and go. It’s part of what you do. You just have to accept it and embrace it. I think Nick Kyrgios is in the commentary box. He’s been struggling a lot with injuries. Talking about major injuries he’s had a few. I’ve been very fortunate to not be away from tennis for long,” Novak Djokovic said, as per Mirror.

“As an athlete I empathise with Nick and anyone who’s struggling. It’s tough, you almost feel helpless at times that something isn’t allowing you to come back to what you love most and you’re unable to do your profession for years,” the 37-year-old added.

Kyrgios failed to take part in any of the four majors last year due to wrist, knee and foot injuries. Kyrgios had succeeded in reaching his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon in 2022. But he had to face a defeat in that fixture at the hands of Djokovic.

The Serbian, who is currently aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title, will next be up against Jacob Fearnley in the second round of Wimbledon. Fearnley qualified for the next round having earned a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(12) victory against qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas.

The second-round Wimbledon match between Djokovic and Fearnley will be played on Thursday, July 4.
