The Gmail app for iOS is finally getting an update, nearly after three months. The latest update comes days after Google added the privacy label for the app on Apple App Store. Similarly, other Google apps like Google Meet, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Google Tasks for iOS are receiving a new version via an OTA (over-the-air) update. Aside from Tasks now supporting widgets on iOS 14, these are minor updates are centred around bug fixes and performance improvements. The software giant had earlier stated that it would roll out an update and privacy labels for Google apps on Apple App Store by January, though very few platforms such as YouTube for iOS had received an update.
The latest update upgrades the Gmail app on the Apple iPhone models to version 6.0.210124. The changelog highlights that the OTA update carries bug fixes and performance improvements. As per privacy labels for Gmail on Apple App Store, the platform collects data such as purchases, coarse location, contact info, user content, search history, identifiers, and usage data for analytics purposes, product personalisation, and app functionality. User ID and usage data are shared with third-party advertisers for personalised ads. Prior to the latest update, Gmail for iOS started displaying warnings about the app being out of date earlier for some users, though Google eliminated that alert without improving the platform. The software giant had said that the delay in the update for its apps on iOS was due to a bug.
Google rolled out an update for YouTube on iOS last month, for the first time since December 2020. The latest version (last released on February 21) did not bring any major features or notable changes to highlight except some bug fixes. Google is yet to add privacy labels or release an update for Google Maps and Chrome browser for iOS.
