Facebook Messenger Introduces Group Video Chat With Six Screens And Selfie Masks
While group chat was quite a helpful feature in itself, the tech giant planned to up its game by adding video calling to it for “those spontaneous moments when text just isn’t enough”.

Facebook Messenger came up with a new feature on Monday which will allow users to video chat in groups. The feature has rolled out on Android, iOS and desktop versions of Messenger across the globe.

While group chat was quite a helpful feature in itself, the tech giant planned to up its game by adding video calling to it for “those spontaneous moments when text just isn’t enough”.As per Facebook, 245 million people make video calls on its Messenger every month. The group video calling feature will come in handy for many occasions such as wishing a closed one on their birthday or connecting with your long distance relatives or friends.

With the group video calling feature, users can now see up to six people at a time on their screens while a maximum of 50 people can join in the ongoing call. Once the number of participants is more than 6, only the dominant speaker is shown to all the listeners.

The update also lets users wear live 3D masks on ongoing calls, much like Snapchat. Also read: New Facebook Messenger Has Snapchat-like Camera Features

In an updated version of the app, a video icon on the upper right of the group chat will appear, tapping on which will notify all the group participants and anyone who wants to join can do so with a single tap. Users can also call selected participants from the entire group.

Facebook is now giving a serious competition to the likes of Skype and Houseparty, platforms which solely depend on their video calling services. With Messenger’s 900 million active users per month, a number triple to that of Skype, Facebook might not take much time in wiping out its competition completely if it keeps on adding such features on its platform.Must read: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Creates Personal Artificial Intelligence For His Home
