Apple is testing a new feature with the iOS 14.5 Beta 3 to prevent stalking via item trackers such as AirTags. As per iOS developer Benjamin Mayo, the new ‘Item Safety’ setting in the Find My app will alert users (if enabled) when an unknown item in possession is tracking their location. If disabled, the unknown item will be able to see your location, and you will no longer receive notifications when the item is found moving with you, the Apple alert shared by Mayo notes.
The iOS developer also adds that the Item Safety setting in Find My app is on by default, but users can disable it manually to prevent false alerts. As mentioned, the setting appeared on the iOS 14.5 Beta 3, and it may roll out with the stable version depending on the feedback. Readers must note that discovering a tracker of any form must be submitted to local law enforcement and users should also remove the battery of the item to block it from transmitting your location. Apple, which reiterates its commitment to privacy and data safety, will hope to prevent potential stalking threats with the Item Safety setting. The company is expected to roll out the stable iOS 14.5 for iPhones in the coming days.

Apple had also introduced a new way to unlock iPhones other than FaceID with the previous beta version of iOS 14.5. The latest system allows users to unlock the iPhone even with they are wearing the mask. However, users would additionally require the Apple Watch for the method to work. On the other hand, the iOS 14.5 Beta 2 had introduced new slide gestures in Apple Music for adding a song to the Now Playing queue or adding it to the Apple Music Library. These options were earlier accessible by long-pressing the song on the music app.
In addition to new gestures, Apple iPhone and iPad users can also access “Play Last” and “Show Album” by long-pressing the song. The company will reportedly roll out new and upgraded emojis from the Unicode Consortium 13.1. For instance, the Headphone emoji has been updated to look like the AirPods Max rather than a generic set of headphones, and the rock climbing emoji now includes a helmet.
The Cupertino-based tech giant is also expected to roll out the App Tracking Transparency tool that has been criticised by Facebook and several other ad companies with the stable iOS 14.5.
