Apple May Introduce a Triple-Lens Camera iPhone Soon: Report

Apple's 2018 Worldwide Developer's Conference hasn't even kicked off yet and there are already reports speculating on the 2019 version of the iPhone and the possibility of it integrating a triple-lens camera setup, a rumour buoyed by Tim Cook's fervour for AR. Triple-lens cameras on smartphones are not unheard of -- the Huawei P20 Pro, for example, boasts such a setup -- so it may not come as a huge surprise when other big tech brands start implementing the same technology. However, Apple is known to set trends and take things a little further than other brands, which may explain why this rumor has tech bloggers speculating about all possibilities.

According to MacRumors, Lu believes that this camera setup will allow for a single object to be captured from different angles via two sensors, thus enabling an “advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision." That would, in turn, be used to find out the distance between the iPhone and the object using triangulation. But what does that mean exactly? Simply put, it could play a big part in 3D-depth sensing as well as augmented reality, both topics close to Apple's heart and therefore a reasonable assumption as to what could be in the pipeline.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has frequently expressed his enthusiasm for AR, including recently at the company's fir,st-quarter earnings conference call: "I am a huge, huge believer in AR. We put a lot of energy on AR, we're moving very fast." Of course this feature is being touted as a possibility for the 2019 model, which could be a few new devices away. But Apple is sure to have some surprises up its sleeve -- and maybe even some clues for the future -- at next week's WWDC 2018 keynote, which kicks off on June 4.
