Patna: JD (U) general secretary KC Tyagi on Tuesday hinted that the days of the ruling grand alliance in Bihar may be numbered and said the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was much more comfortable when the party was in NDA.
The reaction came after News18 reported that Kumar is readying to snap ties with Lalu Prasad Yadav.
He said that JD (U) was not part of the UPA and Congress and endorsed it by saying that Mahagathbandhan was meant only for Bihar.
“So, it’s clear that my party is free to take any decision on national level,” he said. He also warned alliance partner RJD and Congress to desist from criticising Nitish as his party won’t tolerate it.
The fate of the grand alliance became uncertain after Kumar announced that the JD (U) would support NDA candidate Ramnath Kovind in the Presidential Elections.
Earlier, News18 reported that that an announcement regarding the break-up of the alliance could come soon as the JD (U) supremo has made up his mind to steer clear of the political muck surrounding the RJD founder and his family after a series of raids by the Enforcement Directorate and the I-T Department on cases including money laundering.
Top sources told News18 that Kumar would have given Yadav more time had it not been for the RJD leader’s private efforts to strike a compromise with BJP, which, in effect, would have jeopardized the JDU-RJD alliance. Yadav’s efforts to build a bridge with the BJP could have made Kumar’s political position as CM vulnerable as his JDU has only 71 seats in the 243-member Assembly. RJD has 80 seats while BJP has 53 seats.
