New Delhi: The Congress is set to kick off its election campaign in Uttar Pradesh with Rahul Gandhi heading to Phulpur to address a rally on Monday. Phulpur was Rahul's great grandfather and India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's constituency and by choosing his birth anniversary to launch the campaign, the Congress is making it clear that its legacy will be its electoral card.
All the Congress posters are carrying Rahul Gandhi's picture and the party's slogan for the election is 'jawab hum dengein' (we will give a reply).
Rahul will be leading the charge in the politically key state for the 'Mission UP-2012', party sources say. It comes in the backdrop of reports that he could be elevated to the position of working president of the party sooner than late
Rahul, 41, has been instrumental in the show put up by the Congress in the last Lok sabha polls when it secured as many as 22 of the 80 seats in the state, bringing it in the reckoning in the crucial state after two decades.
The party is set at attack Maywawati's government on the issues of lawlessness, misrule and attacks on women.
However, sources say that they are likely to steer clear of the corruption issue as the Congress itself is facing several scams.
