New Delhi: Veteran BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan is all set to be elected as the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha, becoming only the second woman after Congress's Meira Kumar to hold post. The Speaker's election will take place on Friday afternoon after the remaining members of the House are administered oath.
Sumitra Mahajan's name was on Thursday approved for the post. Senior leaders from all parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had moved motions on Thursday proposing her name for the high office.
Mahajan's was the only name that was proposed as the time for filing nomination for the post came to a close at noon on Thursday. With only 29 members left to take oath, the election of the Speaker is expected to take place early on Friday.
She has never lost the Lok Sabha elections since 1989 and was elected from Indore for the eighth time in the just-held polls by a margin of 4.67 lakh votes. She was a Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1999 to 2004.
Meira Kumar, who lost the recent Lok Sabha election from Sasaram in Bihar to BJP's Chhedi Paswan, was the Speaker in the 15th Lok Sabha.####
