Phagwara: BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Friday claimed that the "pro-incumbency factor" would help SAD-BJP alliance to come back to power as the coalition had "ushered a golden period of social harmony and development" in Punjab. "The visible symbols of development in rural and urban areas during the five-year good governance of the alliance will help will get a comfortable majority in the state," he told reporters.
Jaitley, however, admitted that in the past Punjab had witnessed anti-incumbency factor from time to time but said the performance of the alliance had changed this.
"The positive performance of SAD-BJP government has ushered in a golden period of social harmony and development in state, changing its very face."
Accusing Congress of deflecting from the issue of development while campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, he said the party had created a communal divide by talking about nine per cent religious reservation.
"The Congress has an objective during these elections for the sake of the stability and continuation of its government at Centre since some partners of UPA like Trinamool Congress are not cooperating with it. Congress will use UP polls to find out a new partner there," he said.
On AICC chief Sonia Gandhi's allegation at Kapurthala on Thursday that Punjab government had used only 526 crore out of the total 5,000 crore Centre's grant under MGNREGA scheme, Jaitley retorted that the grants were not a charity.
"The tax payers' money is distributed by the Centre to states. Sonia Gandhi has not understood the basic economics of man power resources," he remarked.
