New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to discuss the candidates for the presidential poll, which is scheduled to be held on July 19.
This came hours after sources suggested that the Trinamool Congress chief may oppose Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for the post of the President.
According to sources, Mamta is likely to propose the names of Meira Kumar, APJ Abdul Kalam and Gopal Gandhi to the Congress president in the meeting.
However, the West Bengal Chief Minister is expected to play her card only after the Congress makes the name of the candidate clear.
Talking to mediapersons earlier on Wednesday, Mamata reiterated that the Presidential poll and the financial package for her state must not be linked.
"Our demand for three-year moratorium on debt repayment should not be linked to presidential poll," she said.
The meeting between the Trinamool Congress chief and the Congress president comes almost 24 hours after the former’s meeting with Samajwadi Party supreme Mulayam Singh to discuss the strategy for the presidential poll.
Addressing mediapersons after her meeting with Mulayam, Mamata had said on Tuesday, "We did have a talk, but no names were discussed."
