New Delhi/Hyderabad: Ahead of the ultimatum to the Centre to specify by Monday the time-frame for formation of a Telangana state, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday night reportedly said there will be some good news on this vexed issue in the near future.
He also asked Congress’ 13 party ministers from the Telangana region to withdraw their resignations.
“Pranab Mukherjee asked us to withdraw our resignations and assured us that there will be good news on Telangana issue in the near future. We are also waiting for some special news on the issue,” State Information and Tourism Minister Geeta Reddy told reporters after the meeting.
Reddy led a delegation of the 13 ministers who quit in protest against Centre putting the Telangana on backburner.
Water Resources Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah also shared Reddy's sentiments.
Telangana Rashtra Samiti(TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has given an ultimatum to the Centre to set the time-frame by Monday failing which an “indefinite bandh” will be enforced in the region.
The Joint Action Committee, spearheading the Telangana agitation, meanwhile received a boost with Telugu Desam leaders from that region agreeing to join the group.
It also met on Sunday night and decided to intensify agitation for a separate statehood to the region and called for a shutdown on December 30.
“We apprised him of the situation in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in Telangana region. We also briefed him about the agitation in the state. We told him that time has come for creation of Telangana and people want a separate state,” Reddy said.
“Telangana is important for us as well as the sentiments of people of Telangana,” the Minister said adding, “Holding posts is not important for us. We told him that we will discuss about withdrawing resignations, as he is a senior leader.”
