PM set for House test on Indo-Pak statement
The Prime Minister is expected to defend his position later in the day.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to defend the Indo-Pak joint statement in Parliament on Wednesday.

That joint statement signed in Sharm-al-Sheik earlier this month caused a huge controversy with even his own party reportedly not supporting him.

In the face of an aggressive opposition at home and an unhelpful Pakistan, it’s the Baloch factor that will be the hardest for him to justify.

The Opposition has been hugely critical of the statement because of the inclusion of Pakistan's terror troubles in Balochistan.

The Prime Minister is expected to take part in that debate and defend his position later in the day.

India’s likely stand on the issue would be to take Pakistan head on. Sources tell CNN-IBN Government will ask the neighbour to take action on terror irrespective of composite dialogue.

The Government is also likely to say that Pakistan has been raising Balochistan issue for the last 20 years and that it found mention in the joint statement only because Pakistan PM raised the issue with the PM Manmohan Singh.

“The PM, after Sharm-al-sheik, and in the Parliament, clarified what the statement meant, but since the opposition wanted a structured debate, it is going to take place today and lets not second the debate and lets wait for it to play out,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari.
