Mumbai: Union Agriculture Minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the Maharashtra government should implement the Centre's decision to increase the women's quota in local self government bodies from 33 per
cent to 50 per cent.
While, meeting NCP ministers in state government at Nehru Centre here, Pawar asked them to demand Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan that Maharashtra take the lead in implementing the Centre's decision before March 8, the International Women's Day.
"Pawar Saheb told us that the party should take up this demand with the Chief Minister soon," NCP sources told PTI.
Pawar also discussed the party's strategy for the upcoming elections for 27 Zilla Parishads and 10 municipal corporations in the state.
Sources said Pawar stressed the need to ensure that secular votes were not divided.
"Even though Congress is speaking about going it alone in these polls, we have decided not to announce our stand as of now. If the Congress does not want to ally with us, we are ready to face the polls on our own," sources added.
