New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav has replied to the Election Commission’s notice for allegedly inducing voters. His answer is: there is nothing wrong in what I did.
The commission sent a notice to the SP leader for alleged violation of the model code of conduct after TV channels showed him and his party workers giving money to people at a Holi celebration in his village Saifai in Etawah on Wednesday.
"It was just a tradition (of distributing money) we were following--it became an issue. I have given a reply to Election Commission," he said.
"I am sure the EC will agree with us. I am proud of the fact that our party never takes money for giving tickets. Our party's monetary condition is not good but we have people we have people backing us," he said.
Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh told CNN-IBN on Thursday evening that Yadav was giving money to his extended family on Holi and not bribing voters.
"I don’t appreciate you for calling me for this story only. Holi celebrations were going on. You prove that it was Mulayam Singh who had instructed that this money be distributed. You prove that there was some political discussion there," said Singh before walking out of the show.
Film star and Congress MP Govinda, too, faces a probe by the Maharashtra state Election Commission after he allegedly doled out cash to some supporters during Holi celebrations. Govinda has submitted his reply to a notice for distributing cash outside his house on Holi.
Rajesh Mishra, Congress MP from Varanasi, was caught on camera doling out notes to the relatives of people injured in a clash between two communities in Varanasi on Wednesday.
