Mulayam backtracks on threat to UP lady officer
Mulayam Singh Yadav now says he did not threaten district officials of Mainpuri.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday said he did not threaten district officials of Mainpuri in his speech on Monday.

Mulayam backtracked from his Monday's statement, in which he allegedly made some threatening remarks on the Returning Officer (RO) and the Superintendent of Police for harrassing his party workers, thus affecting his campaign.

The Samajwadi chief was visibly annoyed over the statement of DM, Mainpuri, Ministi S, that she would recommend re-poll in all polling booths recording 70 per cent or more polling in Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency.

Mulayam said he will see how the DM declares the polling as invalid if 90 per cent polling is recorded. ''How can the DM act in an arbitrary manner...I will approach the Election Commission,'' he said.

''I never made any derogatory reference about the DM and only issued an appeal to my voters and the party cadres to ensure maximum turnout on the polling day in Mainpuri," he said, adding ''how can I, a disciple of Ram Manohar Lohia could comment about a women officer''.

Mulayam maintained that whatever he said in his speech on Monday was for his voters and party cadres and there was nothing for the officials of the district administration.

Meanwhile, a report from Mainpuri said Returning Officer (RO) Ministi S was 'pained' on the comments of the Samajwadi Party chief.

Though she had not sent a separate complaint to the Election Commission of India about the incident, but the remarks of Mulayam has hurt the dedicated officer, claimed a senior district official.

The RO-cum-District Magistrate was not available for her comments as she was busy at a meeting at Agra.
