Maneka defends Varun, slams Cong's 'anti-Sikh acts'
Maneka says CD of Varun's alleged hate speeches was fake.

New Delhi/Lucknow: Varun Gandhi's mother Maneka Gandhi broke her silence over her son's hate speech controversy to lash out at the Congress even as the young Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate was in fresh trouble with the Election Commission over alleged distribution of money.

The 29-year-old scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family is likely to move the Supreme Court on Friday to seek a stay on the FIR lodged against him for making inflammatory speeches in his constituency, according to sources close to him. Varun is BJP's nominee from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.

Ten days after Varun's alleged anti-Muslim speeches unleashed a political storm, Maneka Gandhi, a BJP leader, attacked Sonia Gandhi's party accusing it of milking the controversy to "conceal" its "anti-Sikh acts".

"It has become imperative for Congress to show such tapes (of hate speeches) to conceal their anti-Sikh acts," Maneka Gandhi told a regional news channel in an apparent reference to the alleged role of the Congress during the riots after the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

"It is Congress which should be ashamed for giving party tickets to people involved in the anti-Sikh riots in which thousands of Sikhs were killed," she added in the wake of demands that her son should not be fielded in the elections.

Maneka also said the CD of Varun's speeches based on which the Election Commission recommended to BJP to withdraw his candidature was fake.

On another front, the UP Electoral Office forwarded the Pilibhit District Magistrate's report on alleged distribution of money by Varun Gandhi during a rally on March 4 to the Election Commission, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said on Wednesday.
