New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has decided to resign from Lok Sabha in protest against the violence in Nandigram. Two people are dead and at least 20 injured in fresh violence in Nandigram.
A rally by the Bhumi Ucchhed Pratirodh Committee came under attack by suspected CPM workers in Nandigram.
“I am sending my resignation letter to all concerned." It is no longer possible to carry on political activities in West Bengal under the oppressive, one-party rule of the CPI-M". The CPI-M in a planned manner is resorting to violence to recapture Nandigram totally," Mamata said.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivdei said, “Mamta has already sent her resignation letter to Prime Minister and speaker. Entire killing has been done by the West Bengal government. This is worst than the Jaliawala Bagh massacre.”
“I had personally called the Home Secretary to warn him about the situation,” Trivedi added.
Meanwhile, activist Medha Patkar has gone on hunger strike against alleged CPM-sponsored violence in Nandigram. Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Mahashweta Devi have also joined Medha Patkar's protests.
Citing the possible reason for her move, she said "it is no longer possible to carry on political activities in West Bengal under the oppressive, one-party rule of the CPI-M". Banerjee, however, did not clarify to whom she had sent her resignation letter.
She also announced her party's plans to 'paralyse' life in the state for an indefinite period from Monday.
"The CPI-M in a planned manner is resorting to violence to recapture Nandigram totally," Banerjee said.
