Patna: Bihar witnessed a voter turnout of 44 to 45 per cent in the third and penultimate phase of poll in 11 parliamentary constituencies which passed off peacefully save stray incidents that left 12 persons, including four policemen injured.
The police fired in the air after voters tried to storm three booths at Forbesganj and Araria Lok Sabha constituency, but none was injured, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said.
Prominent among those whose fate were decided included JD(U) president Sharad Yadav (Madhepura), RJD union ministers Taslimuddin (Kishanganj) and Jaiprakash Narayan Yadav (Banka), NCP General Secretary Tariq Anwar (Katihar), rebel JD(U) and former union minister Digvijay Singh (Banka).
Also in the race were BJP's prominent Muslim face and former union minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain (Bhagalpur) and Congress' Ranjeet Ranjan, sitting MP, and his wife of Pappu Yadav, from Supaul.
State election sources quoting tentative figures at close of balloting said around 44 to 45 per cent votes were cast in the constituencies of Supaul, Madhepura, Purnia, Khagaria, Begusarai, Banka, Araria, Munger, Katihar, Kishanganj and Bhagalpur.
