Little progress in PM-Mufti talks
PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday to discus his party's demands.

New Delhi: People's Democratic Party leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday to discus his party's demand for demilitarisation of Jammu and Kashmir.

The PM had invited Mufti for talks after the PDP threatened to end its alliance with the ruling Congress if its demands were not met.

Apart from gradual withdrawal of troops, the PDF has also been demanding the repeal of draconian laws, like the Disturbed Areas Act, from Jammu and Kashmir. The talks seem to have remained inconclusive and Mufti is likely to meet the PM again to continue talks on the issues.

The PDF leader said he "fully explained the view of the PDP on gradual withdrawal of forces and repeal of the Disturbed Areas Act to the PM".

However, the issue of withdrawal of support did not figure in the meeting. "We will keep meeting again to take the discussion forward,'' he said. The PDF leader is likely to meet the National Security Adviser on Friday.

After the luncheon meeting with the PM, the PDF leader declined to comment on the fate of the Jammu and Kashmir coalition government.

In Srinagar, the PDP said its political affairs committee meeting will be held as per schedule on Sunday to decide on the future course of action.

Mufti also didn't reveal if the Prime Minister had given any assurance on troop withdrawal. ''I conveyed to Dr Singh the ground situation in the state and the how the people will benefit and get relief by this move," he added.

Prime Minister's Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru said both the leaders had decided to continue the talks. "Today's meeting was part of the Prime Minister's routine meeting with UPA allies," he said.
