Thiruvananthapuram: A settlement seems to have been reached for the family discord between former state minister KB Ganesh Kumar and his wife with Kerala High court on Friday permitting the closure of cases registered by police against both of them.
Considering settlement of issues between both parties, Justice CT Ravi Kumar permitted closure of cases registered at Museum police station in Thiruvananthapuram based on separate complaints made by Kumar and Yamini Thankachi. As part of ending the long-drawn family rift, Kumar and Yamini moved a joint divorce petition in the family court at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
The joint move was part of an out-of-court settlement over the conditions for separation and Kumar even openly expressed regret for the "unsavoury" comments he had made against his wife. As part of the pact, Yamini also filed an application in the Chief Judicial Magistrate court, seeking to withdraw the domestic violence petition she had filed against Ganesh.
Kumar, an actor-turned-politician and lone nominee of the Kerala Congress (B) in UDF ministry, was forced to resign from the Oommen Chandy cabinet earlier this month after Yamini lodged a police complaint of domestic violence against him. Kumar had filed a divorce plea alleging that he was manhandled by his wife following which Yamini had lodged the complaint.
The issue also created a political storm with the LDF Opposition demanding Chandy's resignation, saying he had shielded Kumar who was facing domestic violence charges. Though Chandy attempted for a truce between them in the early stage, working out a pact for separation, it could not be implemented leading to cases and counter-cases by Kumar and Yamini.
Under the proposed settlement, a substantial share of Kumar's property would go to Yamini and their two children.
