Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti violated by the Election Commission of India guidelines on Wednesday by carrying the state flag and Tricolour in her Assembly constituency Anantnag.

The guidelines prohibit a candidate from carrying the Indian flag in a constituency from where they are contesting. Mehbooba is contesting the Anantnag Assembly bypoll to become an MLA. The National Conference has fielded Iftikhar Misgar, while the Congress has fielded Hilal Shah for the June 19 bypoll. Independent legislator Engineer Rashid, who represents Langate, announced he would also stand against Mehbooba Mufti in Anantnag.

Mehbooba presently represents Anantnag in the Lok Sabha.

She took over as the Chief Minister of the state following the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who had won from Anantnag in the 2014 elections defeating Misgar by 6,000 votes, died on January 7, 2016 at Delhi's All India Medical Institute of Medical Sciences. The 79-year-old was suffering from sepsis, low blood counts and pneumonia.

Sayeed had become the chief minister of the state after his Peoples' Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came together to form government in the state following a split verdict in the 2014 Assembly elections.
