Lucknow: In a case of glaring negligence Lucknow Police buried the body of a Hindu Congress worker mistaking him for a Muslim.
The police were forced to exhume the body after the man's family lodged a complaint. A police officer claimed that they believed that Awasthi was a Muslim because he had an operation.
"Police inspected his body to find that he'd been operated such that they assumed he was Muslim," said police officer Rajiv Kishan.
The 24-year-old Kamal Awasthi worked as a clerk with the Congress party and had gone missing early May.
Awasthi's family had tried to lodge a complaint earlier but the police ignored them. It was only when Awasthi's father sought the help of Congress leaders that the police agreed to finally lodge an FIR and investigate the matter.
Awasthi's body was then dug out 20 days after it was buried and handed over to his family.
