Congress using CBI in Sohrabuddin case: Modi
Narendra Modi says Congress has been using the investigating agency as it had accepted its defeat in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was working at the behest of the Congress in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.

Speaking out for the first time since his close aide Amit Shah was forced to quit as Gujarat minister of state for home after he was chargesheeted in the case and arrested, Modi slammed the CBI saying, "Whatever has been happening in Gujarat since last week shows that Congress has accepted its defeat in Gujarat. In the next assembly election Congress is going to field CBI officials against our candidates."

But even as Modi lashed out at the CBI, the agency prepared to take the Sohrabuddin encounter investigation beyond Gujarat to include top Rajasthan BJP leaders too.

The CBI will also present a status report on the case to Supreme Court on Friday. The Supreme Court had asked the CBI to file a report in the high profile fake encounter case in January 2010.

The Action Taken Report will mainly talk about the investigations made by CBI since it filed a fresh FIR on February 1, 2010. The ATR will also include the statements of key witnesses and officials of the Gujarat CID. It will also have details of the arrest of Shah, IPS officer Abhay Chudasama and Arham Farm owner Rajendra Jirawala, where Sohrabuddin's wife Kauser Bi was kept and allegedly killed.

Sohrabuddin was killed by the Gujarat police in a fake encounter in 2005. He was alleged to be a terrorist planning to assassinate Modi to avenge the death of Muslims killed during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The Gujarat CID will also file the chargesheet in the Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case at Danta in Banaskantha jail on Friday. The 1000-page document is expected to be filed by noon on Friday. The CID has so far arrested Banaskantha SP Vipul Agarwal and inspector Ashish Pandya in the case.

There is a strong possibility that the CBI may request the Supreme Court to transfer the Prajapati case to the agency as the two cases may be linked.

Prajapati was the sole witness to the Sohrabuddin fake encounter in November 2005. He was killed a year later in December 2006.
