Chandigarh: Punjab's ruling Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance and the Opposition Congress shared the honours in initial leads in Punjab's 13 Parliamentary constituencies on Saturday morning.
Akali Dal candidates were leading in five seats while BJP led in one seat. The Congress was leading in four other seats.
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu of the BJP was trailing by a small margin on the Amritsar seat to his Congress opponent.
The Akalis were leading in Bathinda, Sangrur, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar, Faridkot and Ferozepur seats. The BJP led in the Hoshiarpur seat.
The Congress led in Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala seats.
The Akali Dal-BJP alliance had won 11 seats in the 2004 general elections while the Congress had won only two seats.
