Aadhaar Bill amended in Rajya Sabha, to be sent back to Lok Sabha
Most of the amendments put to vote were moved by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

The amendments moved by opposition members have been accepted in the Rajya Sabha thereby making it mandatory for the bill to be sent back to the Lok Sabha for consideration. The opposition leaders had questioned the bill's validity after it was passed by Lok Sabha as a money bill.

The Congress and other opposition parties on Wednesday made a strong pitch against the overall nature of the Aadhaar Bill expressing their reservation on presenting it as a money bill.

Most of the amendments put to vote were moved by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. Ramesh also ensured the division of votes in the House to make sure the amendments to the bill are accepted and the bill is sent back to the lower house.

Ramesh claimed he is not against the Aadhaar Bill but should only be used as a proof of identity. "We are not against the Aadhaar Bill, but it should only be used for identity purpose and not for anything else. Aadhaar is a proof for identity. It does not entitles me for any subsidy. It only determines that you are you," Ramesh said, adding that it must not be made mandatory.

The former union minister said that the "whole idea of Aadhaar was to remove duplicity" and cautioned the house that it was passed in its present form it would become mandatory and would create unnecessary problems.

Giving example, he said that as he himself does not have Aadhaar card since he does not require subsidy, but if he was to buy a mobile phone number or an airline ticket and the Aadhaar was mandatory, he would have to get it made.
