The Asian Games this year marks the return of cricket to the continental event after a hiatus of nine years. The sport was first introduced in the Asiad in the 2010 edition where both men’s and women’s events were held, but was discontinued after the 2014 Games. The Indian women’s cricket team will make their Asian Games debut this year. A total of eight teams will be vying to secure the gold medal in Hangzhou, China. The women’s cricket event kicked off on September 19, four days ahead of the official opening ceremony. The tournament is being played in the shortest T20 format.
The top four Asian teams in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will begin their campaign from the quarter-final round. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will enter the 2023 Asian Games as the top team. The remaining four participating sides– Indonesia, Mongolia, Hong Kong and Malaysia– are divided into two groups. Teams of each group will play against each other and the losing teams will compete in the quarter-final qualifier. Based on those results, the quarter-final fixtures will be decided.
All women’s cricket matches of the 2023 Asian Games will be hosted at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field in Hangzhou. The gold-medal match is scheduled for September 25.
The Pakistan women’s team won the gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, while Bangladesh became the runners-up on both occasions. Meanwhile, Japan and Sri Lanka secured the bronze medal in 2010 and 2014 respectively.
