'Shubman Gill is Recovering Well..': Vikram Rathour Offers Key Update on Opener's Health Ahead of Afghanistan Clash
Shubman Gill is 'recovering well' informed Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour, says opener has returned to hotel after being hospitalized

Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour has offered a positive update on Shubman Gill’s health ahead of India’s second ICC ODI World Cup clash group game against Afghanistan. Gill is still in Chennai and had been hospitalised earlier after his platelets count dipped below 1,00,000, but the opener is ‘recovering well’ and has returned to the hotel.

Earlier, cricketnext had reported that Gill is likely to miss the high-octane clash between India and Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14. However, the opener could be back in contention for India’s next outing against Bangladesh on October 19. Rathour informed the media during the pre-match presser in Delhi that Gill is ‘looking good’ which would come as a major sigh of relief for fans and the Indian management.

Gill has been a key cog for India in 2023, and he has been in a purple patch of sorts in the months leading up to the ODI World Cup, but the opener was ruled out of India’s clash against Australia in Chennai due to his illness.

In his absence, India’s top order was rattled by Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. India lost Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer on ducks, the score was 2/3 while chasing 200 before KL Rahul and Virat Kohli saved the day.

Kishan has been playing in the top order and when quizzed about his performance against Australia, Rathour asserted that the management has complete faith in the wicketkeeper-batter’s abilities.

“No specific discussions with Ishan Kishan. He has opened in the past too and we expect him to come good,” said Rathour.

The Indian batting coach said that the biggest strength of the Indian team was the personnel available, saying that Gill should be back in the nets soon.

“The biggest advantage of this team is we have personnel to play in any conditions. At the moment, everyone is fit. Gill will be back in the nets soon,” the 54-year-old said.
