Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out of IPL 2023 and WTC Final, to Undergo Back Surgery: Report
According to media reports, Shreyas would be travelling overseas for the surgery and is expected to be out for at least three months before resuming training

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who has been nursing a back injury, has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The young Indian batter will also miss out on the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June as he would be travelling overseas for the surgery.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain will be travelling overseas for the surgery and is expected to be out for at least three months before he resumes training.

The pain came back to haunt the batter following the Bangladesh tour. Iyer had no relief despite about six injections and was initially ruled out of the white-ball series at home in January against Sri Lanka followed by the first Test against Australia in Nagpur. He then returned to play the following two Tests of the Australia series but did not come out to bat in the first innings of the final Test in Ahmedabad and was eventually ruled out of the match.

Since the pain kept him away from joining the KKR squad in the IPL 2023, the franchise named Delhi batter Nitish Rana as the skipper. Though the team hoped for Iyer’s return in the later half of the tournament, the team will look to flourish under the leadership of Rana and the guidance of newly-appointed coach Chandrakant Pandit, especially after losing the first game of the season to Punjab Kings which was a rain-hit affair in Mohali.

Earlier, there were reports that Iyer was advised surgery by a Mumbai-based doctor and was expected to go under the knife either in India or the UK under the supervision of the BCCI.

The surgery and the recovery process were believed to keep Iyer out of action for five-six months. This would have meant that Iyer would have had to miss the WTC Final against Australia at the Oval in London and also this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). His participation in the ICC World Cup also has been in doubt.
