ICMR Data Leak: 4 Nabbed For Selling Info On Dark Web for 'Quick Money'
The move came around two months after Central probe agencies found personal details of over 81 crore Indians were leaked from the data bank of ICMR and put on sale on the dark web

Delhi Police has arrested four people in connection with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data leak case. They have been arrested for selling personal details of Indians on the dark web.

The move came around two months after Central probe agencies found personal details of over 81 crore Indians were leaked from the data bank of ICMR and put on sale on the dark web.

The accused were arrested around 10 days back from three different states.

According to sources, the accused met on a gaming platform and decided to hack the data and sell it to earn some quick money.

Earlier this year, the Delhi police had taken suo motto cognizance of the matter after reports about the data leak surfaced.

Earlier in October, in what is suspected to be the biggest data leak case, a ‘threat actor’ with a handle on X, formerly Twitter, was found advertising the database in the breached forum on dark web which involves records of 815 million Indian citizens — Aadhaar and passport information along with names, phone numbers and addresses.

The ‘threat actor’ claimed the data — extracted from the Covid-19 test details of citizens — was sourced from ICMR.

ICMR has been facing multiple cyber-attack attempts since February and central agencies as well as the council were aware of it. Over 6,000 attempts were made last year to hack ICMR servers.
