New Zealand retained the top spot in the ICC 2023 ODI World Cup on Monday after their match against Netherlands at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. It was another clinical performance from the Kiwis as they crushed the Netherlands by 99 runs to make two wins in two matches. The runners-up of last World Cup missed the services of their skipper Kane Williamson but they didn’t him much so far. However, he is expected to make a return to the side in their next match.
New Zealand also have an impressive net run rate with +1.958, which is second best after the second-placed South Africa (+2.040) who have played just one match where they earned a big win over Sri Lanka.
WORLD CUP 2023: SCHEDULE | RESULTS | POINTS TABLE | MOST RUNS | MOST WICKETS
The Asian teams hold the next three spots in points table – Pakistan, Bangladesh and India respectively. Babar Azam and Co. won their match against Netherlands, while Bangladesh beat Afghanistan in their WC opener.
Meanwhile, India earned a crucial win over mighty Australia on Sunday by 6 wickets. It was a low-scoring thriller where KL Rahul (97*) and Virat Kohli (85) played fighting knocks to take the Indian team over the line.
Australia, Afghanistan, Netherlands, Sri Lanka and England are yet to open their account on the points table but it’s just the start of the tournament and they will look to turn the table upside down in the coming days.
Meanwhile, New Zealand defeated the Netherlands by 99 runs on Monday
Set a target of 323, the Dutch were dismissed for 223 in 46.3 overs with Colin Ackermann making 69 and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner claiming 5-59.
For New Zealand, who defeated champions England by nine wickets in their opener, Will Young (70), captain Tom Latham (53) and Rachin Ravindra (51) all made half-centuries.
“I think we did a great job with the bat, built partnerships and put up a great score,” Latham said. “Any time in the middle is valuable, partnership after partnership allowed us to put good runs on the board. The spinners were outstanding and the big boys did a great job up front and squeezed them.”
