Australian cricketer Annabel Sutherland became the fifth costliest player in the Women’s Premier League as Delhi Capitals picked up the all-rounder for a whooping sum of INR 2 Crores at the WPL 2024 auction on Saturday.
Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians were involved in a bidding war for the signature of the 22-year-old. The capital city team outbid the inaugural edition champions to rope in the Australian all-rounder.
Star Indian batsman Smriti Mandana, who was brought in by Royal Challengers Bangalore during the first edition for a record 3.4 Crore Indian Rupees remains the most expensive player to be sold in the WPL, followed by Australian star Ashleigh Gardner, who was roped in by Gujarat Giants for 3.2 Crore Rupees.
English woman Natalie Sciver enjoys the joint second spot as Mumbai Indians picked her up at 3.2 Crores. Indian allrounder Deepti Sharma, who was signed by UP Warrioz for an amount of 2.6 Crore Indian Rupees comes in as the third most expensive player in the history of the tournament.
Indian sensation Jemimah Rodrigues, who plies her trade for Delhi Capitals following their 2.2 Crore purchase of the batsman last year, stands fourth in the list followed by Australian batsman Beth Mooney and maverick Indian opener Shefali Verma, who were roped in by Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals respectively for Rs. 2 Crores each.
Sutherland joins the likes of Verma and Mooney on the list as the hammer dropped at the 2 Crore mark to place her in the DC roster.
The 22-year-old Australian seems to be a brilliant addition to the capital city squad, which already boasts big names such as Alice Capsey, Rodrigues, Laura Harris, Marizanne Kapp, Meg Lanning, and Verma.
Delhi also announced that they retained the services of players including Arundhati Reddy, Jess Jonassen, Minnu Mani, Poonam Yadav, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Sneha Deepthi, Taniyaa Bhatia and Titas Sadhu ahead of the auction, while they released Aparna Mondal, Jasia Akhter, Tara Norris.
