In a recent conversation with Connect FM Canada, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha discussed his experience directing Ra.One, starring Shah Rukh Khan in 2011. While the film’s impressive visual effects have received acclaim in recent years, fans have been expressing a desire for a sequel. However, neither Sinha nor SRK have addressed this possibility. During the interview, Sinha said that he regrets not delivering a satisfying film with SRK. He admitted, “I think I failed Shah Rukh Khan. I did not make a good enough film but it was such a great opportunity, I should have made a better film.”
When asked whether there will be a sequel, Sinha said that it was a “presumptuous thought.” He explained that when he came up with the idea for Ra.One, he had just faced a major career setback. Fortunately, he was able to work on a film with SRK. “It’s a very presumptuous thought. Such big films happen, you don’t plan them. When I thought of Ra.One, I had just delivered the biggest flop of my career thus far, Cash. I thought of that film and it happened, which is quite surprising to say the least,” he shared.
As quoted by Indian Express, in an earlier interview, Sinha revealed his emotional reaction to Shah Rukh’s statement, saying, “My heart was broken. I thought to myself, ‘How could Shah Rukh say this?’” He acknowledged that SRK had given his all to the film but added, “He was hurt, that’s probably why he said what he said. I was hurt by what he said, but I was young then.”
He also spoke of the love that film had received online since its release. Speaking of it, he said, “I am a big believer of how long a film lives determines its legacy. The fact that a film that was so harshly judged and criticised 12 years back lives on online with people calling it ahead of its time speaks volumes. Then, that is the film’s success and it gives me a lot of happiness.”
