Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins stitched a record 202-run partnership for the 8th wicket to hand Afghanistan one of the most ridiculous defeats cricket fans have ever witnessed in the history of World Cups. In that gigantic partnership, Maxwell scored 179 runs in 102 balls. Aussie skipper Cummins, on the other hand, scored all of 12.
Seems like an insignificant contribution, right? Think again. Australia were written off when the 5-time world champions were reduced to 91/7 enroute to Afghanistan’s target of 292.
Maxwell being Maxwell went berserk. The 35-year-old all-rounder from Australia fought through cramps and spasms to deliver arguably the best innings in ODI cricket. Out of Australia’s 293, Maxwell scored 201 and better yet, hit the winning six to bring up his double century that took Australia to the semi-finals of 2023 edition of World Cup held in India. Maxwell was everyone’s hero and rightfully so.

Cummins, a silent saviour
As all the camera lens and eyes were glued onto Maxwell’s ridiculous strokeplaying, Cummins held his own on the other end. But Cummins wasn’t just a mere spectator watching his partner script history from the best seat of the stadium. The Aussie captain, not particularly known for his batting prowess, endured 68 deliveries for his unbeaten 12*.
