‘No Wigs, Simple Makeup’: Hema Malini Recalls How Gulzar Styled Her For 1975 Film Khushboo
Hema Malini shared that Gulzar instructed her to move her eyebrows less during scenes.

Veteran actress Hema Malini recently attended legendary lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar’s biography book launch. At the event, she talked about working with the lyricist over the years, and how he cast her in an unconventional role in this 70s film. The book launch event was held in Mumbai. Hema recalled doing a non-glamorous role for a Gulzar film. She said, “I wanted to do something different at that time.” The film was titled Khushboo, and it was released in 1975. Hema continued saying that it was an era where actresses were famous for their big, distinctive hairstyles, and flashy makeup. She said, “Those days, we had those big hairstyles. We wore those heavy wigs.” She stated further, “When I came to his set, the first thing he said was ‘No’. He said, be natural, as you are. No wig, nothing.”

Hema Malini revealed further that when she went to the makeup room with her mother, she got the shock of her life when she saw the saree that she was going to wear. She said, “It was this simple saree with a non-matching blouse. I was very happy to wear that but my mother was like, ‘this should be more glamorous’.” Gulzar did not agree to them, and Hema Malini had to wear that simple saree only.

Hema Malini stated that since she was a dancer, she had to use her eyes to express, and because of that her eyebrows moved a lot. In this film, Gulzar did not want her to do that. She said, “He would say your eyebrow is dancing. Then I would control myself and speak.”

Directed by Gulzar, the 1975 film Khusboo starred Jeetendra and Hema Malini in the lead roles, while they were supported by Sharmila Tagore, Asrani, and Om Shivpuri. It was produced by Prasan Kapoor and Jeetendra under the banner of Tirupati Pictures. RD Burman composed the music in the film, while the cinematography was done by K Vaikunth, and the editor was Khanti Bhai Pandya. Gulzar and Hema Malini have worked in films like Kinara and Meera as well.
