The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Helsinki-based River Recycle Oy (RR) initiated a new collaboration with the signing of an MoU at the World Economic Forum 2024 in Davos, dedicated to river protection and improvement, flood protection, environmental upgrading, climate resilience, and climate change adaptation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
RR promises financially sustainable solutions specialising in the prevention of plastic pollution in oceans. “Therefore, the collaboration between MMRDA and RR will complement MMRDA’s strategic goals of addressing environmental challenges in and around the MMR, alongside elevating the sustainability of the region and tackling climate-related risks,” a press release said.
“MMRDA believes that this collaboration will make meaningful contributions to the MMRDA’s pursuit of sustainable urban development in the MMR,” it added.
“This partnership will bring forth proficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly solutions for the effective removal of floating plastic and river conservation. Hence, we are immensely hopeful that our river cleaning efforts will proceed further with rigorous pace and unmatchable efficiency due to this collaboration,” said Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
A key component of the MoU is the sharing of best practices to support river protection and improvement, flood protection, rainwater absorption, and climate resilience in the MMR. The sharing of expertise extends to the enhancement of the air quality index and the establishment of urban sponges in the surrounding regions.
The facilitation of globally recognised practices like the promotion of circular economy practices like waste-to-energy solutions, and efficient waste management will also be one of the components.
The development of Blue & Green infrastructure across the MMR to enforce the improvement of air quality and rainwater absorption will be achieved through this collaboration.
“The MoU between MMRDA and River Recycle Oy, Helsinki, Finland, is one of our many exceptional directives to fulfil the dream of MMR’s sustainable future. Millions and millions of people residing in the MMR will greatly benefit from this collaboration, as it will address numerous environmental challenges faced in the surrounding areas and improve their quality of life,” Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Commissioner of MMRDA, said.
