Karan Johar Recalls Being Told 'Gadar Jaise Nahi Hai' After Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham Released
Released in December 2001, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan and Kajol in key roles.

Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham remains one of the most loved movies to date. However, when it was released in 2001, the filmmaker was told that even though it was a hit, it was not as big as Sunny Deol’s Gadar. In a recent interview, Karan recalled the same and revealed he was told by a distributor ‘Gadar jaisi nahi hai’. Both, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Gadar hit theatres in 2001.

“I called up everybody (his distributors after the release of K3G), the Punjab distributor said, ‘Han, bahut badi hit hai par Gadar jaisi nahi hai’ (Yes, it’s a very big hit, but not like Gadar) (laughs). So I said, ‘Theek hai bhaiya. Number 2 toh hai na. Wo main seh loonga. Par flop toh nahi hai na? (It’s okay. But it’s number 2, no? I can bear that. But it’s not a flop, right?).’ He said, ‘Kya bol rahe ho! Full shows ja rahe hain (What are you saying? All the shows are full).’ So I was like, ‘Thank God’,” Karan told Pinkvilla in a recent interview.

Karan Johar also recalled not winning any awards for the film and added that was a ‘grounding’ experience since he had won a lot of awards for his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. “That was a really grounding experience for me. I fell back on my feet and realised that you just have to work and don’t expect anything from the beginning. Because there’s no replacement for hard work,” he said.

Released in December 2001, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in key roles. Rani Mukerji also played an extended cameo in the movie. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, on the other hand, was released in the June of the same year.

Several other big movies including Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai and Madhur Bhandarkar’s Chandni Bar also hit theatres in 2001.
