The Telugu crime action film Shiva, starring Nagarjuna, has celebrated its 35th anniversary in Indian cinema. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, the film was released on October 5, 1989. Produced by Akkineni Venkat and Yarlagadda Surendra under the banners of Annapurna Studios and SS Creations, Shiva also marks Varma’s directorial debut. The film was subsequently remade in Hindi in 1990.
On the occasion of the 35th anniversary, Ram Gopal Varma wished people who were involved in the film. Taking to X, he wrote, “Today OCTOBER 5th marks the 35th anniversary of mine and @iamnagarjuna‘s ADVENTURE..Here’s wishing all the people involved in its making.”

Nagarjuna also remembers his conversations with his dad and legendary actor Akkineni Nageshwar Rao. “It’s been 35 years and a day since the release of the iconic #shiva!! I cannot forget that day driving in a car with my father Anr garu and he said ‘I saw Shiva last night and this morning I heard it’s a big hit, but I believe it will become one of the biggest hits of the Telugu film industry!!,” he posted on X.

Responding to his post, RGV thanked him for giving him his first break. “And thank you for giving me a BREAK of a LIFE TIME ..Without ur unwavering support and absolute trust in me, there wouldn’t have been neither SHIVA nor ME,” he wrote.
The film also stars Amala, Raghuvaran, Viswanath and Tanikella Bharani, among others. The cinematography was done by S. Gopala Reddy while edited by Sattibabu. The music for the film was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The story and screenplay were written by Ram Gopal Varma, while the dialogue was by Tanikella Bharani. Shiva also won several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Telugu, Nandi Awards: Best Director (Varma), Best First Film of a Director, and Best Dialogue Writer (Bharani).
