Every once in a while, there comes a trailer that speaks volumes. There are stories that tug you right at the deepest corner of your hearts and Nagesh Kukunoor’s 'Dhanak' is just that.
With just the right amount of joy and the right pinch of heartbreak, this film comes as a breath of fresh air. It is not the first time the director has chosen a theme that has touched the people worldwide. Be it ‘Iqbal’ or 'Dor'; there’s always something magical about Nagesh Kukunoor’s films.
Starring Hetal Gada, Krrish Chhabria, Rajiv Lakshman, Vipin Sharma in key roles, it revolves around Chotu and Pari's magical journey. With a backdrop of divine deserts of Rajasthan, the trailer opens with a soothing voice, two kids, holding hands with their backs facing the camera and them fronting towards a wall covered with Bollywood posters and the words ‘Mere Pyaare Shah Rukh Khan Ji..’ echoing all around. Gradually, the plot develops and it is revealed to us that older of the two, Pari, who is determined to get her younger brother Chotu his eyesight back before he turns 9, believes that Shah Rukh Khan can do that even when god has failed to as the actor is seen on an eye donation poster. The two of them, then embark on a journey to meet the superstar, not knowing any route or any clue on how to go about it.
Definitely, not the first time when King Khan’s fandom makes up for the core of a film; from ‘Billu; to Shah Rukh Khan-starrer yet-to-be-released ‘Fan’, there’s a long list of films featuring the superstar as the storyline. As an ardent fan of SRK, the mere fact that Shah Rukh Khan has reached a stage where he isn’t just one of the top-notch actors in our film industry but a subject of the films too mesmerises me enough to step in the theatre.
Then what makes this heart-warming tale a bit more gripping than the previous ones? More importantly, what makes up for the fact that our heart is rooting for ‘Dhanak’ more than ‘Fan’ starring the actor himself? Is it the innocent dreams of the two child actors or the beauty of Rajasthan or the melodious background score?
(With just a few days left for the release of ‘Fan’, we couldn’t help but draw comparisons between the two)
Keep it simple, silly
Looks like some clichéd adages never go out of fashion. While ‘Fan’ boasts about new and innovative VFX and other technologies that sometimes go above our heads, this soothing tale just features two kids in the utmost simplistic avatar; one you can relate to, one you can see yourself in, one you want to see yourself with.
No branding, no marketing, no over-the-top promotions
Yes, SRK is itself a brand now. But that isn’t the only reason why people would go gaga over a two minute trailer. Or maybe, it is. But you just can’t deny that it’s one of those trailers that grip you right from the beginning. The plot is intriguing enough to fetch your attention from the first looks of it. And no, don’t even get us started with promotion spree of ‘Fan’. From videos to posters, no stones have been left unturned for the already running on high-budget film.
Nagesh Kukunoor’s almost-signature picks
With that rustic desert feel and a traditional track playing in the background, you know it’s him. It seems the director knows even the remotest of thoughts that can strike the right chords. (Don’t miss ‘Duma Dum Mast Kalandar’ in this one)
Can Shah Rukh ever really understand his fans’ agony?
Nothing will ever be even closely attainable from an actor’s end to what his/her fans feel like. And no matter how much you try, we can’t believe the actor can play his own fan as great as kids with little dreams can.
Watch the trailers and decide for yourself.
