When Shweta Bachchan Agreed She Gets Her OCD From Jaya Bachchan: 'Amitabh Bachchan Has...'

Neha Dhupia once revealed on her chat show that Shweta Bachchan has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD. While Neha and Shweta did not clarify if this was a medical diagnosis, Karan Johar explained certain behaviours that Shweta follows and said that the entire Bachchan family has a very orderly way of living.

Neha asked Shweta, “What’s with this OCD? Why do you keep adjusting things.” Shweta replied, “I don’t. I just like things a certain way. I don’t even like to say I’m OCD anymore because everyone says they’re OCD, and I don’t want to be what everyone else is.”

Karan Johar recalled experiencing Shweta’s “OCD behaviour” and said, “We went out for dinner once and I have a big problem that I eat off other people’s plates.” Shweta interjected, “I can’t bear it.” Karan added, “Shweta, OCD’s brand ambassador, doesn’t want to admit to her problem because she’s almost embarrassed about the extremity of the problem. But I have eaten something from her plate. Then very quietly she put her fork and spoon down and she didn’t eat… Much later she told me that she didn’t eat because I had eaten off her plate and she went home hungry. That’s when I realised the extent of her madness.”

Karan said that Shweta gets this trait from her mother, Jaya Bachchan. Karan recalled how while narrating the script of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to Jaya, the veteran actress’ eyes were constantly on the person cleaning her silverware. Karan said that Jaya would keep finding faults during the cleaning while he narrated emotional scenes to her.

“It’s a family thing. Then Amit uncle (Amitabh Bachchan) came on my show and told me how they mark every newspaper with a tag when they’ve read it. So when Amit uncle has finished reading the Times of India, he’ll write ‘AB tick’, then it’ll go to AB Jr (Abhishek Bachchan) then JB then SB. It’s a methodical family,” Karan Johar said.

The filmmaker said that Shweta realised this behaviour after marrying into a Punjabi family. Shweta Bachchan tied the knot with Nikhil Nanda in February 1997. They have two children, Navya Naveli Nanda and Agastya Nanda.
