Anne Hathaway’s captivating onscreen presence has been lauded throughout her career, from her chemistry with Robert Schwartzman and Chris Pine in The Princess Diaries series to her compelling chemistry with Jake Gyllenhaal in Love & Other Drugs. Now, in The Idea of You, Hathaway’s romantic connection with Nicholas Galitzine is garnering attention. However, Anne Hathaway’s journey to achieving such onscreen chemistry hasn’t been without its challenges.
In a recent interview with V Magazine, the actress opened up about her early days in Hollywood, recalling a particularly uncomfortable experience during an audition. She recounted being asked to engage in kissing scenes with “ten different men” as part of a chemistry test, an ordeal she described as unsettling and distasteful.
Hathaway said, “Back in the 2000s and this did happen to me, it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it. I was told, ‘We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross and I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labelled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it. It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better.”
In her latest film, The Idea of You, where Anne Hathaway has turned producer, she took the actor’s chemistry tests in a unique manner. She explained, “We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love, that they would put on to get my character to dance and then we’d do a short little improv. I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play and we just started dancing together.”
In the film, based on Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel, Anne Hathaway plays the role of a 40-year-old single mother who develops a romantic connection with a 24-year-old international artist, played by Nicholas Galitzine. During Galitzine’s audition, he chose a song by The Alabama Shakes and Hathaway recalled that the audition process felt natural. Upon hearing the music, she couldn’t help but smile and the two artists spontaneously began dancing together. During the moment, they shared an authentic connection and she even noticed the director, Michael Showalter smiling.
