Many big budget films are failing to recoup their budget in the present times, yet low budget films with strong content are doing well at the cinemas. This year, a Tamil film starring Vijay Sethupathi was released without much fanfare, promotions or buzz, except for being marketed as Sethupathi’s 50th film. The film was Maharaja, which was made on a meagre budget of Rs 20 crore, but ended up grossing Rs 107 crore at the box office. Maharaja was declared a hit and is also the second highest grossing Tamil film of 2024. Now, this film is making a splash on Netflix. It has occupied the first position in the OTT platform’s top 10 trending list.
The film, after a successful theatrical run, started streaming on Netflix. Maharaja also stars Anurag Kashyap as a dreaded villain. Vijay Sethupathi played a doting father, who can go to any lengths to protect or please his daughter. The film has many twists and turns that can keep the audience glued to their seats. The suspense starts in the film right from the beginning, ending with a shocking twist in the climax.
A man named Maharaja has his own salon. After the death of his wife, he lives with his only daughter. At the beginning of the film, Maharaja goes to the police station and reports the theft of the dustbin of his house which is nicknamed Lakshmi. The police initially rebuke him for his complaint but later find out about his true intentions. Maharaja started streaming on Netflix from July 12 and quickly made its way to the top 10 trending list in India. Maharaja has been written and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan.
Soon after its release, director Nithilan Swamonathan faced charges of plagiarism from producer Maruthamuthu, who claimed that the director had stolen his story for the movie. Maruthamuthu said that small producers like himself are not allowed to grow in the industry and demanded justice for the same
