Respect Priyadashan's decisiveness, PC Sreeram's ability to adapt to directors' varied styles, says filmmaker KV Anand
The fact that it was Sreeram who had recommended Anand to Priyadashan for his film ‘Thenmavin Kombath’, his role in Anand’s successful career remains crucial.

The acclaimed cinematographer KV Anand may have started his career as a photo journalist, but it was his impactful pictures that helped him get associated with PC Sreeram. Anand, who refers to Sreeram as his ‘boss’, also accredit his success to him. “My experience with PC Sreeram has been extremely enlightening. The fact that he knows the capability of each of his assistants, he is able to extract the best out of them. When I started working with him, he would send me for color correction. It meant I had to go to the laboratory and check each shot to ensure they were perfect. And because he had full faith in my potential, he was willing to give me more work,” he says.

Anand - who calls Sreeram a ‘great human being’ - also lauds him for his ability to adapt. “Sreeram can change his style according to the different directors he works with. Since he doesn’t adhere to strict rules, he is appreciated by everyone,” he says.

The fact that it was Sreeram who had recommended Anand to Priyadashan for his film ‘Thenmavin Kombath’, his role in Anand’s successful career remains crucial. “My first break ‘Thenmavin Kombath’ happened because of Sreeram. Priyadashan had gone to top cinematographers for the film, but he decided to choose a debutant.”

While trust is the key characteristic of Priyadashan that Anand respects a lot, the cinematographer also appreciates him for his ability to take instant decisions. “Priyadashan chose me over other renowned cinematographers. This explains a lot about the trust he had in my work. He supported me and gave me for my first film – it was a big thing for me. He also narrated me the entire script before getting me on board, which again reiterates the faith he has in his technicians. My entire career would have changed had I worked with someone else. His ability to take decisions sans any delay is also appreciative.”

Since Anand has worked with talented directors such as Priyadarshan, Shankar, Vasanth, Rajkumar Santoshi and Mansoor Khan, we asked him what’s the common qualities between them. “They all believe in the script. They treat script as the hero. Rajkumar Santoshi rewrites his script. Before the film begins, he would have three versions of the script. I have learnt a lot from all the directors I've been associated with. This also includes first time directors like Susie Ganesan (Virumbukiren) and Gandhi Krishna (Chellamey).

Anand may have been a bit surprised with the news of Akshay Kumar playing a baddie in Rajinikanth's ‘Endhiran 2.0’, but he is happy that he accepted it. “The role was first offered to Aamir Khan and Kamal Haasan before it was given to Akshay Kumar. But I’m happy that he has accepted it. I worked with Akshay in Khakhee. He is fantastic person. He is a through professional. I’m sure his character in ‘Endhiran 2.0’ is very powerful.”
