Many Bollywood actors rose to fame right after their first or second film. Some even went on to become superstars of Indian cinema. Some, however, were just one-hit wonders. One such actor was Vijay Arora. He even threatened superstar Rajesh Khanna’s fame, but later got lost in the crowd.
The late actor became an overnight star in Bollywood after his debut film Yaadon Ki Baaraat. Due to his good looks and charming personality, Vijay Arora was thought to be the next superstar. Many believed he would replace Rajesh Khanna from the throne of the most-liked actor in Bollywood in the 1970s. Directed by Nasir Hussain, Yaadon Ki Baaraat was released in 1973. It was written by the hit screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, who also wrote blockbusters like Sholay and Deewar. It starred actress Zeenat Aman and Dharmendra in the lead role.
Even Rajesh Khanna was so scared that he declared Vijay Arora as his successor. Rajesh Khanna himself had accepted that if anyone can challenge his fame, it is Vijay Arora.
Rajesh Khanna, who was a superstar at that time, started to fear that Vijay Arora might take his place. Due to this, Rajesh Khanna declared Vijay Arora as his successor and said, “If any Punjabi man will rule Bollywood after me, it is this actor. He is a man who will rule Bollywood.”
He acted in many TV serials and 110 films but became known in every household for his role as Meghanad in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana.
He delivered several flops and average hits at the box office. In 1987, he again rose to fame, but this time in the TV industry. He played the role of Indrajit Meghnad in the blockbuster hit serial, Ramayan. It was directed by Ramanand Sagar. It became the most-watched television series between 1987 and 1988. Vijay Arora’s performance in the show was widely appreciated by critics and audiences.
The actor got married to ex-model and Miss India, Dilber Debara. Vijay Arora died due to a stomach ailment in 2007 on February 2 at his residence.
